Dimitraki Papamiltiadous

The memorial of Dimitrakis Papamiltiadous, which is also the result of the love of Agia Marina’s people, is found next to the old church of the village.

Dimitrakis Papamiltiadous was fighting young man, who took part not only in the struggle against the english colonialists but also during the incidents in 1963-64. He was an active member of EOKA and thus, took part in numerous organised missions against the English, by exchanging important letters or providing ammunition.

During the turkish mutiny in 1963-1964, he took part in the organisation of a fighting team. He was also responsible for the construction of extemporary panzers. He demonstrated great fighting spirit and extraordinary bravery in battles in Polis Chrysochous, Kokkina and Antrolykou.

The young man died on the battlefield on the 9th of March 1964. He was shot while carrying a wounded fighter.

The community of Agia Marina Xyliatou honours all the heroes by organising annual memorial services and by offering honoris causa garlands.
